When you are trying to reduce sound in your home or some other environment, you first have to decide if you are looking for sound proofing or sound absorbing as they are two different solutions.
Sound Proofing Insulation
You will need sound proofing insulation when you are attempting to get rid of noises that are originating from a different room or coming from the outdoors. Traffic noises, airplane sound or building and construction sounds are examples of noises that you wish to sound proof against. Soundproofing insulation can stop noise from passing through walls, ceilings, floors and from windows and doors.
There are unique insulation materials produced that you can set up in each of these locations to reduce or completely prevent sounds from outdoors.
• For sound proofing ceilings and walls, there are batt insulation products made from wool or cotton that can function great for soundproofing. As a plus, this particular type of batt insulation can also provide heat insulation. Mineral or rock wool insulation is also fire resistant.
• Floor soundproofing can be completed using a soundproofing underlayment made from rubber. Rubber is a much better sound insulator than fiberglass, cork, nylon or polyethylene. It is a terrific solution for condos and multi-level homes.
• Lining the perimeter of doorways with soundproofing aluminum together with silicone seals can help keep noises out of rooms. Silicone is a better sound seal than either vinyl or foam.
• You can soundproof windows with a window seal kit, a transparent sound barrier, a sound barrier blanket or you can replace the windows using soundproof replacement windows.
In case you are a light sleeper and vehicle sounds or neighborhood commotions bother you, then you will need to have sound proof insulation to maintain a quiet bedroom atmosphere.
Sound Absorbing Insulation
Alternatively, if you need to restrict noise from a particular room or location from getting out of that space, you are going to need sound absorbing insulation. This type of insulation is used to confine noises from theater rooms, music studios and any room that creates a considerable amount of sound that disturbs your listening environment.
There are many forms that sound absorbing insulation take including:
• Acoustic Fiberglass or Acoustic Mineral wool insulation panels are a functional solution for reducing sounds coming from appliances, machinery, and ceiling and partition panels.
• Acoustical Soundproofing Foam absorbs sound waves, minimizes reverberation, and improves acoustics. These sound absorbing panels also protect from drafts, heat and moisture.
• Acoustic Cotton Panels and baffles made from cotton fibers dampen from low to high frequency noises. It may be used in business and household areas to prevent sound transfer.
The quality of the installation of your sound insulation will determine just how much noise is reduced from the outside and how much sound is absorbed from inside rooms you want to soundproof. Generally there is a material that has been engineered for each soundproofing problem.
