If you are trying to reduce noise in your home or some other setting, you initially have to determine if you are looking for sound absorbing or sound proofing as they are two distinct solutions.

Sound Proofing Insulation

You will want sound proofing insulation if you are attempting to do away with sounds that are coming from a different room or coming from the outside. Traffic sounds, airplane sound or building and construction noise are examples of noises that you want to sound proof against. Soundproofing insulation will prevent noise from passing through walls, ceilings, floors and from doors and windows.
There are specific insulation materials developed which you can install in each of these areas to reduce or completely prevent noises from outdoors.
• For sound proofing ceilings and walls, there are batt insulation products produced from wool or cotton that will function great for soundproofing. As a bonus, this particular type of batt insulation will also provide thermal insulation. Mineral or rock wool insulation is also fire rated.
• Floor soundproofing can be accomplished using a soundproofing underlayment manufactured from rubber. Rubber is a much better sound insulator than fiberglass, cork, nylon or polyethylene. It is a terrific option for apartment buildings and multi-level homes.
• Lining the perimeter of doorways with soundproofing aluminum together with silicone seals will keep sounds out of rooms. Silicone is a much better noise seal than vinyl or foam.
• You can soundproof windows with a window seal kit, a clear sound barrier, a sound barrier blanket or you can switch out the windows with soundproof replacement windows.
In case you are a light sleeper and traffic sounds or neighborhood commotions bother you, then you will need sound proof insulation to preserve a quiet bedroom atmosphere.

Sound Absorbing Insulation

On the other hand, if you wish to prohibit sounds from a specific room or place from exiting that space, you will need sound absorbing insulation. This type of insulation is used to isolate noises from movie theater rooms, music studios and any room that generates a considerable amount of sound that disrupts your listening surrounding.
There are many forms that sound absorbing insulation take including:
• Acoustic Fiberglass or Acoustic Mineral wool insulation panels are a versatile option for minimizing noises from appliances, machinery, and ceiling and partition panels.
• Acoustical Soundproofing Foam absorbs acoustic waves, reduces echo, and enhances acoustics. These sound absorbing panels also guard against drafts, heat and humidity.
• Acoustic Cotton Panels and baffles made from cotton fibers depress from low to high frequency sounds. It may be used in commercial and household locations to prevent sound transfer.

The extent of the setting up of your sound insulation will determine just how much noise is reduced from the outside and how much noise is absorbed from within rooms you want to soundproof. Generally there is a product that has been designed for each soundproofing challenge.
